It is a cold Friday night and the teenagers are looking for something to do. It is the first Friday of Christmas break and the girls want to spend it right! Callie Jacobs, Abby Lane, and Kaitlin Smith are three best friends and do everything together. They have their normal Friday routine: go to school, drive around listening to music after school ends, get ready to go somewhere at Abby's house, go to a party, and be home at eleven for their weekly sleepover. But this week that will change. The three girls went to school and were going to Abby's house after school to get ready for a party at their friend Matts house. Abby's mom ordered the girls pizza before they went out which was their favorite food.

While they were getting ready and jammin out to music, it started to rain. It was very cold outside so the roads started to become icey. Abby's mom started to worry about the girls driving tonight. They were so excited for the party tonight that Abby's mom couldn't say no. Abby, Kaitlin, and Callie continued to get ready texting all their friends to make sure they were still going. Callie was especially excited about tonight because her new boyfriend was going to be there. The girls finished getting ready, ate the pizza, and were about to leave when the rain got harder. Abby's mom made them wait twenty more minutes until the rain lightened up. The three girls were anxious to leave. The rain finally lightened up and the girls left. Abby's mom told the girls that she would be worried all night and they needed to be home no later than 11. Little did she know, this wouldn't be the case.

Abby was the driver tonight and had a brand new white range rover that she got for her birthday last week. Abby was driving, Callie was in shotgun, and Kaitlin was in the backseat. They had the music on full blast listening to their favorite country songs. It was about a fifteen minute drive down long narrow streets and a short bridge that Abby's mom was worried would be iced over. Abby was very cautious on the drive there and texted her mom to let her know she made it to Matts safely. The girls got there around 8 and knew they had to be home no later than 11.

The party was very fun for the girls. Callie was hanging out with her boyfriend most of the night and Abby and Kaitlin met up with their other friends. They listened to music and mingled with each other. The night flew by and the girls lost track of time. All three of their phones had died so they weren't looking at the clock. It was now 11:45 and Callie was no where to be found. She was with her boyfriend and Abby and Kaitlin ran around the party searching for her. Meanwhile at home, Abby's mom had been freaking out for the past hour and could not get in touch with any of the girls. She just prayed that they would come home soon and safe.

They finally found Callie and left the party immediately. Again, Abby was driving, Callie was in shotgun, and Kaitlin was in the backseat. It was now midnight and the girls were freaking out. The roads were still icey but Abby had forgotten that. The icey bridge that Abby's mom was worried about was only five minutes away from Matts house. The girls were on the bridge when all of a sudden bright lights were staring them in the face. Abby couldn't see, she was on the bridge and could not swerve. A big truck with bright lights stared her straight in the face; the truck was swerving in between both lanes. They were hit head on. The truck kept driving and did not stop at the scene of the accident. The driver did not care about the girls. Abby was killed instantly. Callie was not wearing a seatbelt and flew through the windshield. She was killed. Luckily Kaitlin was wearing a seatbelt and survived the crash with few injuries. She was the only one breathing and alive at the scene of the accident. She had no idea what to do, all three of their phones were dead. She waited and prayed to God for help and that everything would be okay. Slowly a car pulled up to the scene, called 911 and waited until the ambulance arrived. It was now about 12:30, Abby's mom decided to drive to Matt's house to see if there was a problem and wonder why they had not been home over an hour and a half ago. On her way she heard an ambulance, she prayed to God that it was not Abby and her friends. It was. She was crossing the bridge when she noticed it was Abby's car in the accident. Her biggest nightmare came true. Kaitlin was hysterically crying but was able to talk to Abby's mom and the police to give them the story of what had happened. The police found the truck in a ditch only a mile up the road and stated the driver was intoxicated. The driver was drunk and the roads were icey, he lost control of the car and went into the other lane causing a head on collision. The two girls had been killed by a drunk driver and wouldn't be returning home. Abby's mom was devastated and had to be the one to call Callie's mom and let her know that Callie wouldn't be coming home tomorrow. Kaitlin was not only devastated but knew that her and her friends would be the topic of the town.

Kaitlin spent the whole Christmas break with not only her family but with Callie and Abby's also. Every night, she would wake up from a nightmare. The same nightmare happened every night. The accident would replay and she would wake up in fright right before the drunk driver hit them. She dreaded going to sleep because she knew that the dream would return. When the break was over she did not want to return to school. She knew everyone would stare and talk about her. She would have no one to sit with at lunch. Her friends were gone. Everybody would stare because she would now be a loser with no friends. She wanted to leave town and start over at a new school. She knew she couldn't do this though.

She missed the first three days back from the break. She finally built up enough courage to go to school on Thursday. Her fears came true. The whispers were loud and the eyes were huge. Everyone stared. She walked down the hall by herself with eyes glaring and mouths talking. She didn't like the attention. Everyone was coming up to her asking her about her friends and about the accident. She did not want to talk about that night or even think about it. It was over, she wanted to move on.

As time went on things got better. The questions and gossip stopped and she was back to her normal life again with new friends. Although they were not the same as Callie and Abby, she loved them and was thankful to have new friends that cared about her. Kaitlin knew that she would never be late for curfew again.

Later that year, around March, her school asked her to give a speech to the Junior and Senior class about careful driving and destructive decisions. As much as Kaitlin did not want to do this, she knew she had to. This speech could save someone else's best friends life. This could save her new best friends life. Kaitlin prepared herself for this and spoke in front of these grades in early April. She then went on and spoke at different church's and other schools. She knew she could make an impact and save others from feeling the pain she felt when she lost her friends.
