Raining
(The scene begins with a girl [Gracie] staring at the sky, lying on the ground. A boy [Mike] walks over and lays beside her, frowning)
Mike
It looks like it’s going to rain. (Looking directly at her)
Gracie
Does it? (Slowly sits up and glances down at Mike)
Mike
Yeah, it looks like it will.
(Sits up)
Why didn’t you tell me?
Gracie
(Shrugs)
Dunno.
Mike
You’re lying, and we both know it.
(It is silent for a few moments)
What are you thinking? Right now, I mean. What’s going on in your head?
Gracie
I don’t know, Mike. I honestly don’t know. It’s like a big blank. Like I’m not there anymore. Did I disappear? Am I dead? I wonder that sometimes but never really think about it.
Mike
Oh…
Gracie
(Silent)
You should go.
Mike
Do you want me to go?
Gracie
(Silence once again)
You should go. It doesn’t matter what I want.
Mike
What will you do when I’m gone?
(Gracie shrugs, and Mike stands up, looking at the sky again)
It’s already rained, hasn’t it?
Gracie
It’s cloudy, but it hasn’t-
Mike
I didn’t mean the weather, Gracie, I mean you. It’s raining in your world, in your head. I’m sorry I wasn’t there to help.
Gracie
You shouldn’t be sorry. It was my fault anyway. Remember? I made all the mistakes. I let those things happen to me and hurt you. That’s why you don’t love me anymore.
Mike
(Says quietly)
I don’t not love you.
Gracie
(Ignores that statement)
Well, I’m over it. I’m over the alcohol and the parties and the sex. I really am.
Mike
That’s the person I didn’t love. The one who was into all that.
Gracie
(Nods slowly)
To be honest, I didn’t like that person either. I got my payback though. It hit me afterwards. When I lost you, I thought I could live. I thought everything would still be happy. I didn’t think about you for one second. You never crossed my mind, even when I was sleeping with other guys. But, I crossed your mind, didn’t I?
(Mike nods and Gracie lets out a bitter laugh)
You must really hate me. Don’t worry because I hate me too.
Mike
Didn’t you hear me before? I don’t hate you. I just didn’t like that side of you. She scared me. But, this side of you scares me even more.
Gracie
Because I’m a big heap of sadness, drama, and tears?
Mike
Because I might never see you again while in this state...
Gracie
Why would you still want to see me?
Mike
(Mike crouches down and offers a hand, smiling)
Because the Gracie I loved, the Gracie I still love, is in there somewhere. Right now, it’s raining on her, but I’ll be her sun. I’ll get rid of the rain and bring her back.
Gracie
(Slowly takes his hand and both stand up)
She’s gone, Mike.
Mike
(Pulls her into a hug that she doesn’t return)
I don’t believe that. I love you.
Gracie
Don’t say that, not to me. Not now.
Mike
I love you.
Gracie
(Raises her voice)
Shut up, Mike.
Mike
I’ll always love you.
Gracie
(Screams and pushes him off)
I said not to say that!
Mike
(Stays there, staring at her and whispers)
I love you.
(Walks towards her and hugs her once again, only she returns the hug)
Gracie
I love you too. So… so much.
