"When we practice gratitude, what we have becomes enough." -Unknown

When old things end and the new begin,
you’ll forget those that fare unfazed by what’s been.
My pillow’s not made to absorb any bitterness tonight.

Now free from your fragile brains of glass,
bare feet now on soft green blades of grass,
I won’t ponder your pitiful, purposeful lack of flight.

I can no longer see you from where I stand,
independent here on my own plot of land,
where I can see flowers regardless the lack of light.

I know I should thank you for bringing me here
where the weight of my body and brain disappear.
I can’t issue these short lived visits if not for your spite.

The author's comments:

I wrote this after my 4 closest friends got very angry at me and collectively said some of the most scarring, hurtful things I've been told about myself. After crying it out for a few hours till I dozed off, never wanting to wake up again, I did in fact wake up with mental clarity and sympathy for my friends. The things they'd said were likely reflections of how they felt about themselves, seeing as they were irrelevent and untrue about me. We have a choice when insulted to take offense and stew over it, or take it as constructive critism, if applicable. Learning to be the bigger person when wronged is one of the hardest lessons, but it will continue to appear until we learn to be mature about others' actions against us.
