Scarlet Fingernails
The girls, they all have scarlet fingernails.
They are seductresses. Their crimson claws
are ever reaching. If not one then another.
I don’t have those scarlet fingernails.
Sometimes I wish I did. When I see their cheap, easily
mistaken happiness. I envy them then.
I’ve tried to have scarlet fingernails. It
doesn’t work. I can do scarlet toenails,
but when I try to do fingernails it doesn’t work.
My fingernails are plain and simple.
Not much likes to hold onto my plain fingers.
My fan club is a niche cult.
I envy those girls who have
charmed the general population with their lovely red-adorned fingers.
But when I see them crying,
when their happiness is gone,
like how cheap toys break after five minutes,
I always remind myself how wonderful it is
that I’m not cut out for scarlet fingernails.
