Along the Milky Way
When I was little I sincerely believed there were signposts along the Milky Way.
I saw it once,
star-spangled road to heaven,
in the sky above the north Idaho prairies
and the glow of a forest fire
just over the next hill.
The smell of smoke in our nostrils
as we all looked up and ahhed.
I have since forgotten how it looked.
I will find it again someday,
and follow the signposts
along the road to heaven.
Along the Milky Way.
