Nightlight or no
Man looks at Death
like they do the dark,
I find
Some are repelled by her,
running in every direction to
escape Her clutches
They cling to Life
as if He is the sun,
rejecting any blackness
But eventually the sun will
succumb to Death as well,
and the world would be cloaked in
darkness
Others rush into the black
They are the ones who have
rejected Life for what He is,
seeing no point in stalling
the inevitable
An unexplainable pull lures them
deeper
until there is no longer any sigh
of light
I dance with Death on occasion
Sometimes the shadows
fall onto my skin
and mix with my blood
Longing picks up my feet and drops them
one step in front of the other,
all the while my mind is
trying to resist
Ribbons of black caress and pull me
closer,
and they are warm with icy traces
Every time I return to this black abyss,
Death waits for me
She spins me around
and grins at me with a smile
that is inviting,
yet filled with terror
But in the darkness I find a spark,
its glow so captivating
With gentleness it leads me
through the dark curtain
and back into the light
I sit on the edge
Letting my feet dangle into
the murky black
The whispers of yearning
do not push me fully over,
but I know
when it is my time
my fear will only last so long
For I was never one to be afraid
of the dark
