The Better Lovers
my new love,
this is what it is:
to hear a velvet voice
against guitar strings plucked
in a cafe-bookstore downtown
with the window a watery
painted night
the streetlamps shimmering
against the puddles
and into this room
i sit stifling a laugh
against my propped
up knees, and you,
against yours with my
sock feet to warm them.
we kiss and your soft voice
slips words into my lips
where I swallow them
into the deep chasm
that is my heart
the one that you finally opened up
and sang me of its qualms
as they spilled,
staining your
lap.
