Tally Marks
I keep thinking,
in between the space where our lips
meet,
that maybe I was never meant
for love,
and that this facade that we’ve created
only serves to mask
a deep hole
that so many absences have left,
carved into my heart
so that I don’t even notice
yours
and when your fingers explore
the curve of my spine
I can’t help but wonder if the other five
are grasping a knife
and if you are only waiting for an opportunity,
when my eyes close momentarily
in ecstasy,
to add the last tally mark.
