Ode to Six Thirty Sunsets
Now I would be the first to say that I’m
A winter child from my head to my toes
A child of frosty air that nips your nose
Of snowy quiet nights, low light, sublime
That blankets cities one flake at a time
Of cold dark evenings under starlit snows
That keep you home with tea and swaddling clothes
A calm, dark, quiet icy mountain climb
But dear god how I love the glimm’ring light
That warms the land and brings with it new life
That stretches deeper into the dark night
Recov’ring joy, protecting us from strife
That light of gardens, love, deep breaths, fresh air
Light of warm evening winds in golden hair

I have recently begun walking home from my evening extracurriculars and in doing this through the winter and then into the spring have discovered the absolute joy of seeing the light come back. I sort of started writing this poem in my head as I was walking home on a Thursday evening at the beginning of March. It was the first time I had walked home from that extracurricular while it was still light and it felt so amazing. I had always been kind of negative and cynical about spring and made fun of my parents for being so excited about it, but this year has definitely changed my mind. And inspired me to write a poem.
