Lawrence Taylor, also known as LT, is an ex-NFL player who has been inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame for his pass rushing abilities. In his career, Lawrence Taylor had 132.5 sacks, 9 all pros, and 10 pro bowl appearances in 13 seasons, and he is one of two defensive players to win MVP (Most Valuable Player). The stars speak for themselves on his dominance. Lawrence Taylor played from 1981-1993, during which he was able to revolutionize a previously neglected part of the game. When LT entered the league the average lineman was 6’4’’ and 274 lbs. Lawrence Taylor was strong enough to push around most linemen, but if he couldn’t, he was fast enough to run around them. Lawrence Taylor also had high reaction times that allowed him to adjust to different situations during the game. Lawrence Taylor ran a 4.53 40-yard dash, on the faster side for the average player and exceptional for a lineman. According to a New York Times article from the time of his draft, Lawrence Taylor, “[...] is strong enough to bench-press 395 pounds” (Litsky). An opposing team's lineman had stated that “No human being should be six four, two forty-five, and run a four-five forty.” Lawrence Taylor’s dominance is undisputed in the football world. A pass rusher is the person who tries to stop the quarterback, the person who throws the ball, before he can throw it. If the pass rusher is successful he must tackle the quarterback, resulting in the offense being pushed back a few yards. LT was able to record 20.5 sacks in the 1986 season alone. T.J Watt, who has had the most sacks in the NFL this year, has only gotten 19 sacks. This may appear to reflect poorly on Taylor, but T.J. Watt has an eighteen week schedule with offenses that pass far more. Compared to LT’s 16 week schedule with offenses that run the ball more than they pass, there are far more opportunities for sacks. Lawrence Taylor is also one of two defensive players to win MVP, which is primarily an offensive player award. Bill Belichick, six-time Super Bowl winner and coach of Tom Brady, claimed that he was, “[...] not putting anybody ahead of Lawrence Taylor,” (Belichick). Praise like this from Bill Belichick is very rare and should not be taken lightly, especially considering Bellichick’s extensive knowledge and experience. However, some people can prove that someone like T.J. Watt would be able to play better against Lawrence Taylor’s competition. However, that would discount the fact that the position had been created by Lawrence Taylor, and without him, T.J. couldn’t have ever played it. Pass rushing was not the common goal for defenses in Taylor’s time as it is today. People forget that T.J. Watt is following in Taylor’s pioneering footsteps, and his accomplishments would be impossible without Taylor.. In conclusion, Lawrence Taylor was able to play at a level unparalleled for his time and revolutionized American football, making him the best defensive player of all time.
